Dr. Shifumi Sakaguchi, a founding researcher of Regcel Corporation, a recipient of Kyoto University Innovation Capital, and Professor Emeritus of Kyoto University, has been selected to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

　Dr. Sakaguchi graduated from Kyoto University School of Medicine in 1976. Since 2011, he has served as a professor and special-appointment professor at the Frontier Research Center for Immunology, Osaka University.

　Sakaguchi discovered regulatory T cells (Treg), which suppress immune responses, and established a new principle for selective regulation of immunity by identifying the transcription factor FOXP3, which regulates their differentiation. Based on the results of this research, RegCell was founded in 2016. The company is currently developing antigen-specific Treg cell therapies with the aim of realizing innovative treatments for autoimmune and other diseases.
