Innovation Kyoto 2016 Investment Limited Partnership ("KYOTO-iCAP No.1 Fund"), with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Corporation ("Kyoto iCAP") (Head office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Koji Murota) as unlimited liability partner, has made an investment in Ocean Eyes Inc. ("Ocean Eyes") (Head office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Yusuke Tanaka), a venture company that utilizes research results from Kyoto University.

Outline of this investment
Ocean Eyes was established in April 2019 to commercialize the research results of the "Development of Data-Oriented Real-Time Analysis Platform for Sustainable Fisheries," a research project supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) CREST and Kyoto University's "Incubation Program," by Kyoto University and Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), this venture company was jointly established by researchers from JAMSTEC.

Ocean Eyes' founding researchers are working with fishermen in "the industry farthest from digitalization" to develop a system that predicts oceanographic information in order to bring about sustainable fishing that is friendly to both fishermen and the planet. The oceanographic information provided by Ocean Eyes ranges from sea temperature, currents, and salinity to "where fish are likely to be caught.

This information is expected to be applied not only to the fisheries industry, but also to various other fields, such as predicting the impact of marine engineering works on marine resources, predicting the drift of marine debris and other pollutants, reducing fuel costs for ships, and developing new insurance products.

Kyoto iCAP recognized that the system developed by Ocean Eyes has already begun to be accepted by fishermen because of its usefulness, that Ocean Eyes' business will make a significant contribution to "sustainable use of marine and fishery resources, international resource management, and maintenance and promotion of the multifunctional role of fisheries and fishing villages," as stated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and that Ocean Eyes' business is expected to be deployed not only in the fishery industry but also in many other areas. The company has evaluated that Ocean Eyes' business will make a significant contribution to "sustainable use of marine and fishery resources, international resource management, and the maintenance and promotion of the multifaceted functions of the fisheries industry and fishing villages" under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and that the business is expected to expand not only in the fishery industry but in many other areas.
